More about Membership

As a body of Christ, we are in partnership with The Methodist Church in Singapore, which will be seen as caring and sharing community. The Methodist Church in Singapore is blessed with much financial and manpower resources. We have a responsibility to pool such resources together so that we can truly be a community that is filled with the fire of love. There is so much we can do together as a church; we can only succeed if we are likeminded and have the same love being one mind and spirit of Christ (Phil 2:2).

Membership of the Society shall consist of:-

• Ordinary Members who shall be members or regular worshippers whose names appear on a Methodist church roll; and

• Associate Members who shall be non-Methodists who subscribe to the objectives of the Society and enjoy only rights and benefits as the Board may from time to time allow.

Individuals applying for membership shall:-

• have attained the age of 16 years
• be citizens of or residents in Singapore
• be in the opinion of the Board of good character
• not be legally or mentally disabled
• not be a discharged bankrupt
• not have a conviction standing against him for an offence punishable with imprisonment

Application for membership shall be submitted on a form prescribed by the Board and shall be accompanied by payment for such number of shares that the applicant wishes to take up and the entrance fee, provided that such payment shall be refunded where an application for membership has been rejected.

Every application for membership shall be proposed by one member and seconded by another member.

The Board shall have the power to approve or reject any application without assigning any reason thereof provided that an applicant so rejected may appeal in writing to a general meeting of the Society.

Please note that the application form must be downloaded, completed and signed by applicant, proposer and seconder before returning to MCSL office by postal mail. Application will only be processed upon receipt of payment.

Privileges and Benefits

We invite all Christians to join our fraternity as members.

A Common Good Fund (CGF) was set up to allocate a portion of our yearly surplus for the benefit of members of the society. As set out under clause 7.6 of the Methodist Co-operative Society Ltd's By-Laws, the CGF shall be used for the benefit of members of the Society and may be devoted to any educational, medical, social or charitable purposes. The CGF is derived from annual appropriation of the net surplus of the Methodist Co-operative Society Ltd.

As a member of the Methodist Co-operative Society Ltd, you are entitled to numerous privileges and benefits which were launched using the CGF. Some of which are listed below:

Group Accident Insurance Scheme
Members below 70 years old, 71-75 years old and 76-80 years old are covered for $10,000, $5,000 and $3,000 respectively for death and total disability under this scheme for accidents worldwide. The policy is renewed on an annual basis.

Bursary Awards
To support children of members' educational needs, we grant Bursary Awards. An independent panel of judges determines the awards for Primary, Secondary, Junior College and Tertiary students, based on their eligibility and qualifications.

Hospitalisation
To cheer members, we send a fruit basket to any member who is hospitalized in Singapore, provided the MCSL office is informed of the hospitalisation.

Complimentary Passes to Places of Interest
For members' enjoyment and leisure, the MCSL has also acquired Corporate Membership with the SINGAPORE SCIENCE CENTRE and SINGAPORE FLYER. Click here for Singapore Flyer Corporate Membership Loan Policy.

Members are now able to obtain Complimentary Passes to the above mentioned places of interest from MCSL office. The complimentary pass for the Singapore Flyer entitles 4 persons to free admission while each complimentary pass for the Science Centre entitles 5 persons to free admission. All complimentary passes come with discounts at participating food and beverage and retail outlets.

We have a limited number of complimentary passes (1 for the Flyer and 4 for the Science Centre). Please note that there is a popular demand throughout the year especially during weekends, public holidays and school holidays. Loan of complimentary passes are only made available to MCSL members on a first-come-first-serve basis. To enquire on the availability of passes prior collection, please contact the Administrator @ 6767-1635 during office hours ie 9:00 am to 6:00 pm from Monday to Friday.

Events
The CGF Committee organizes for members a wide range of subsidized events, educational talks and outdoor tours. Past organized events include the following: D-I-Y Massage, Chinese Tea Appreciation, Christmas Party, Beauty & Health Workshop, 'Healthy Eyes for Life' Eye Care Forum, Vegetable and Fish Farm Tours and Food Processing Factory Tours.

Membership Sub-Committee
A sub-committee on membership was established with clearer focus in July 2008 to serve our members better for the years to come.

We welcome suggestions from members on other ways in which the co-operative can better serve its members. More beneficial schemes may be explored and launched for members.

Application for Top Up of Shares

Members may at any time apply for top up of shares. However, each member is eligible to have a household limit of 1,000 shares at $10 per share. Definition of household would include spouse and children staying in the same residence.

Application for top up of shares shall be submitted on a form prescribed by the Board and shall be accompanied by payment for such number of shares that the applicant wishes to buy.

Nomination of Shares

When filling in the form, please note the following:

  • You must sign on the nomination form in the presence of two witnesses.
  • Your witnesses must be at least 21 years old and of sound mind.
  • You and your nominee(s) cannot act as the witnesses for your nomination.
  • You can have more than one nominee but the portions or percentage given to all the nominees must not exceed one whole or 100%.
